Women and Children's Health Programs

Women’s Health Initiatives (WHI)

Administrative Director:
Patricia McGill

Regional Manager:
Dr. Frank Sanderson

AHSC’S WHI recognizes a population health approach to women’s health. The vision is Healthy Women across the Lifespan and Healthy Women, Healthy Families. The goal is an integrated women’s health network that incorporates initiatives from all of the programs and services throughout the region, working collaboratively with our community partners.

Some of the highlights include:

  • Family-centered Maternal/Newborn Program
  • Women's Health Centre at St. Joseph's Health Care Complex
  • Breast Health Program
  • Wellness Programs for Women at the Community Health Centre
  • Integration and Coordination of Care and Services Committees in urban and rural communities
  • Eating Disorder Workgroup
  • Lymphedema Clinic
  • Community partnerships addressing teen pregnancy, domestic violence and poverty
  • Annual women’s conferences

The AHSC initiatives recognize the distinct nature of women’s health: causes of death; diseases and conditions of women and how they experience them; women’s quality of life; risk factors and their consequences for women and gender as a determinant of health, as outlined by Health Canada’s Women’s Health Strategy.
