VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES

The Department of Volunteer Services of the Saint John Regional Hospital is always seeking caring, reliable people to assist patients, families, visitors and staff. People ranging in age from l5 years to Senior Citizens have found volunteering at the Hospital a challenging and rewarding experience.

During the initial interview, volunteers are encouraged to select a volunteer project most suited to their interests. Orientation to the Hospital as well as specific project training is given to new volunteers before they begin their volunteer activity.

While this sheet details activities at the main Hospital, volunteers are also active at the Saint John Regional Hospital's Ridgewood Veteran's Wing, the Saint John Regional Hospital Auxiliary, St. Joseph's Hospital, the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation, Mindcare New Brunswick and the St. Joseph's Hospital Foundation.

CHURCH SERVICE

Volunteers assist in taking identified patients to church.

GERIATRICS

Volunteers, assist with recreational activities such as bowling, reading groups, movie nights, pet visits, outings and musical entertainment. Assigned duties will depend on the interests and abilities of the patient and the volunteer.

VARIOUS TIMES THROUGHOUT THE DAY - 7 DAYS A WEEK

EMERGENCY

Volunteers provide comfort and act as a liaison between patients, family and staff in this area.

ESCORT SERVICE

Volunteers escort new patients to their rooms and discharged patients to their cars. They also provide extra comforts and supportive care to patients, relatives and visitors.

MONDAY-FRIDAY: 09:30 A.M. - 12:30 P.M. or 12:30 P.M.- 4:00 P.M.

FLOWER DELIVERY

Volunteers receive and make deliveries of flowers and fruit baskets to patients and staff.

ACCEPT FLOWERS: MONDAY-FRIDAY: 1:00 P.M. - 3:00 P.M.

MAKE DELIVERIES: MONDAY-FRIDAY: 3:00 P.M. - 4:30 P.M.

FOUNDATION

Volunteers assist with special mailings, addressing envelopes, folding letters and stuffing envelopes.

FLEXIBLE AS ARRANGED

GIFT SHOP

Volunteers sell and stock items in the Gift Shop located in the lobby.

VARIOUS TIMES THROUGHOUT THE DAY - 7 DAYS A WEEK

HAIR KAIR KORNER

Volunteers escort patients to Hair Kair Korner and back to their rooms, make appointments, receive payments for services, help maintain cleanliness of shop and assist the Professional Stylists.

MONDAY-FRIDAY: 9:00 A.M. - 3:30 P.M.

LIBRARY

Volunteers take magazines and books to the units for the enjoyment of the patient.

VARIOUS TIMES THROUGHOUT THE DAY - 7 DAYS A WEEK

PAEDIATRICS-CHILD LIFE PROGRAM

Volunteers (l9 years or older) under the supervision of the Child Life Coordinator assist with various activities and supervision of the play area.

VARIOUS TIMES OF THE DAY - 7 DAYS A WEEK

PALLIATIVE CARE

Volunteers familiarize new patients and their families to the Palliative Care Unit. They offer emotional support and join in diversional activities such as cards, games, reading and music.

EVERY DAY: SUNDAY-SATURDAY: 9:00 A.M.-1:00 P.M.; 1:00 P.M.-5:00 P.M.; 5:00 P.M.-8:00 P.M.

REFRESHMENT CART

Volunteers serve refreshments and offer companionship to patients coming for treatment areas.

MONDAY-FRIDAY: 8:30 A.M. - 12:00 P.M.
