Surgery Program, ICU and Anaesthesiology

Administrative Director:
Cheryl Swan

Chair of Surgery Group:
Dr. David Tees

Surgeries

Surgical specialty services are provided to patients through AHSC’s 23 operating rooms located in four facilities across the Region.

Surgical services are offered at the Saint John Regional Hospital (SJRH), St. Joseph’s Hospital (SJH), Charlotte County Hospital (CCH), and the Sussex Health Center (SHC)

Surgical services are provided to patients primarily living in Region 2; however, specific specialties/surgeons offer service to patients from across the province.  Administration and surgical department heads work in partnership to identify ways to foster and develop a patient-focused care environment.  For the fiscal year April 1, 2006 to March 31, 2007 there were 17,429 surgical procedures performed in al facilities (includes cardiac, neurosurgical and gynecological procedures).  Coordination of trauma care is a priority.  Extended recovery for certain Day Surgery patients was initiated on 3DS (Short Stay / Burn Unit).

St. Joseph’s Hospital supports a day surgery program that offers extended recovery for patients having specific procedures (ie laparoscopic, cholecystectomy, arthroscopic shoulder procedures/repairs).

An 8 bed short stay unit is located at the Saint John Regional Hospital offering appropriate care for up to 72 hours for surgery patients

The Endoscopy Unit located at the Saint John Regional Hospital offers the ability to perform procedures by medical and surgical specialties.  Local bronchoscopy procedures are also done in this unit.  ERCP’s are done in the Diagnostic Imaging Department with physicians, staff, and equipment mobilized from the Endoscopy Unit.

The staff of the Intensive Care units (ICU), post Anaesthetic Care unit (PACU), Day of Surgery Admissions unit (DOSA), Central Sterilizing Departments (CSD) and Pre-assessment clinic (PAC) provide support services within the Surgery Program.

At the Saint John Regional Hospital, OR, PACU, DS, DOSA, PAC also provide support for cardiac, neurosurgery and gynecology services.
