Respiratory Therapy

The Respiratory Therapy Department of Region 2 is comprised of almost 50 Registered Respiratory Therapists who work in 4 facilities within the Regional health authority:  Charlotte County Hospital (St. Stephen), Sussex Health Centre, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Community Health Centre (Saint John) and the main tertiary site – Saint John Regional Hospital

The departments throughout Region 2 offer a comprehensive and intensive level of in and outpatient services that include but are not limited to:

  • Adult, pediatric & neonatal ventilator management (life support)
  • Pulmonary function testing
  • Arterial blood gas sampling
  • Management of oxygen and inhaled medications
  • Respiratory assessment
  • Emergency and Code blue response
  • Asthma and COPD education
  • Attendance at high risk deliveries and c-sections
  • Assisting with anesthesia services (Main & Cardiac Operating Room as well as Labor & Delivery)
  • Assisting with bronchoscopy

Many of the staff are certified in ACLS, PALS and NRP (advanced life saving protocols).   Among the staff are 2 certified asthma educators, one COPD educator, a CPR/BCLS instructor and a PALS/NRP instructor.  Two of the therapists are currently enrolled in an anesthesia assistant program.  Two of the staff are heavily involved in the NB Aircare program.  The department also boasts service in both official languages and 6 staff are currently enrolled in French language training/upgrading.

The Respiratory Therapy department (Region 2) is a close partner with the New Brunswick Community College Respiratory Therapy Program.  The staff serve as preceptors for the students in their clinical rotations.
