The Department of Organizational Learning nurtures a learning culture throughout the corporation by facilitating the architectures that enable continuous learning and by delivering and facilitating learning opportunities for AHSC staff.

The department has been innovative in delivering more than fifty different learning programs in sites across the Region. Learning opportunities are presented via traditional classroom-based programs, theatre sessions, self-directed learning, and web-based knowledge transfer over the corporate Intranet. The ongoing development of e-learning programs has enabled cost-efficient, 24/7 site independent access to learning.

Programs such as Ethics, Customer Relations, Confidentiality and Interpersonal Communications focus on living the AHSC values and mission. Development in critical thinking skills and efficiency/productivity is emphasized as well as the skills and knowledge necessary to work in a safe environment. New staff are welcomed with a competency based orientation program. An internally developed organizational computer literacy assessment provides direction to a robust computer training program. The French Language Training program has recently been expanded with the addition of a full-time, on-site instructor. Compliance with CPR certification is affirmed through the CPR re-certification program.

The Organizational Learning Department plays an integral role in the AHSC Intranet initiative. The Director of Organizational Learning chairs the multidisciplinary Web Applications Committee and the department works with content owners to appropriately utilize the Intranet in a number of value-added applications. The Department has worked to develop the corporate Intranet as a mechanism for learning and information/ knowledge transfer.

A partnership forged with Connect NB Branché and Industry Canada in 2000 continues to provide opportunities for technological applications to enhance services to patients in the Child Life Department, in Occupational Therapy and Speech Pathology, and computer training services for AHSC staff.

The Library Services branch of Organizational Learning provides services to the professional staff of AHSC. By providing literature search and document delivery services and by maintaining an appropriate library collection, staff have access to the information needed to make evidence-based decisions. In addition to the five site libraries, Library Services also has a virtual presence on the corporate Intranet.

Organizational Learning also facilitates our community’s access to health information by developing consumer health information centers, and by working with health providers in communicating education and information through electronic means.
