Women and Children's Health Programs

Obstetrics/Gynaecology

Administrative Director:
Patricia McGill

Clinical Department Head:
Dr. Frank Sanderson, OBS/GYN

The Obstetrics/Gynaecology Program is committed to a family-centred approach to care with Combined Care of mothers and newborns, and fathers (support person) encouraged to stay. Hostel services are available for families whose newborn requires a longer stay in hospital. Prenatal services include preassessment visits, follow-up phone calls, breast feeding support, and prenatal classes.

A Fetal Assessment Team under the direction of a perinatologist provides specialized tertiary care in high-risk pregnancies. Clinics in genetics and infertility are also offered. The Obstetrics Program works closely with Family Medicine, Paediatrics, and the Community Health Centre.

State of the art technology including laser and laporoscopic equipment is utilized in Gynaecology clinics. Among others, colposcopy clinics are offered at the Saint John Regional Hospital and general gynaecology clinics are offered at Sussex Health Centre and Charlotte County Hospital. Women's health issues will be addressed through an integrated health network.

The Obstetrics/Gynaecology Program also links with the IWK Health Centre and the Dalhousie University Medical School. The Program regularly utilizes Telehealth technology for Teaching and Grand Rounds with other Maritime Centres. Individuals within the Program are involved in clinical research projects.
