Nephrology

Administrative Director:
Jill Barton-MacPhee

Division Head:
Dr. Paul Sohi, Nephrology

Dialysis patients are cared for within the overall context of the Nephrology Program. Dialysis is not an end in itself, but is a potentially useful therapy in the management of some patients who require nephrologic care. The overall care of renal patients, including dialysis, maintenance of access function, prevention and management of derangements in divalent ion metabolism and therapy of anemia in chronic kidney failure, is managed by an experienced and dedicated team of Nephrologists and nephrology nurses. This team is supported by allied health professionals including a social worker, dietitian, pharmacist, and biomedical engineer. A nephrologist, hemodialysis nurse and home dialysis nurse are available 24 hours a day, every day.

The Atlantic Health Sciences Corporation Nephrology program, based at the Saint John Regional Hospital, was established in 1971 and has grown to its current program components and services, which are:

  • Health Promotion
  • Pre-dialysis Clinic
  • In-hospital dialysis
  • Home dialysis
  • Pre-transplant Unit
  • Renal Transplant Unit
  • Inpatient Unit
  • Acute Renal Failure Service
  • Detoxification Service
  • Patient Support Group
  • Consultation Services

Several members of the program participate in professional association boards and committees:

  • Dr. P. Handa, Professor of Medicine, Dalhousie University, Governor of the American College of Physicians, Atlantic Provinces;
  • Dr. Sohi, Chair of the Medical Advisory Committee of the New Brunswick Branch of the Kidney Foundation of Canada, participant in DOQU, and member of the Professional and Policy Committee of the Canadian Society of Nephrology;
  • Dr. N. Gogan, recipient of 1997 trainee award from the Canadian Society of Nephrology;
  • Valerie Price, President of the Canadian Association of Nephrology Nurses and Technicians;
  • Fay Clarke, Secretary Treasurer, Canadian Association of Nephrology Nurses and Technicians;

Eight nurses are certified Nephrology Nurses by the Canadian Nursing Association.
