Internal Medicine

INTERNAL MEDICINE INPATIENT CARE

The Inpatient Nursing Unit most often used for Internal Medicine is located on 4CN at the Saint John Regional Hospital. This Unit is devoted to the care of acutely ill patients who may be suffering from a broad spectrum of medical disorders. Twelve beds on this Unit are also devoted to acutely ill renal (nephrology) patients.

The 4 diagnoses most often seen on this floor include:

  • Congestive Heart Failure/Chest Pain
  • Simple Pneumonia
  • Gastroenteritis
  • Renal complications

Many of the patients on the Internal Medicine Unit have multi-system disorders and may require care from different Internal Medicine specialists including Rheumatologists, Infectious Disease Specialists, Nephrologists, Hematologists, Endocrinologists or Respirologists. Treatment regimes are often complicated and nursing staff are required to possess critical care knowledge and skills.

With the emphasis clearly on acute patient care on the Internal Medicine Nursing Unit, equipment needs are similar to Intensive Care. Heart monitors, vital sign monitors, intravenous pumps and specialized beds are standard requirements, as are ongoing education courses for the staff who work here.
