Family Medicine

Administrative Director:
Laurie Janes

Clinical Department Head:
Dr. Brian Craig, Family Medicine

Program Directors:
Dr. Chris O'Brien, Palliative Care
Dr. Jennifer Hall, Family Medicine Training

A comprehensive service delivery for Family Medicine is provided in four facilities within Atlantic Health Sciences Corporation: Charlotte County Hospital, Grand Manan Hospital, Sussex Health Centre, and Saint John Regional Hospital. 120 Primary Care Physicians serve the catchment area of St. Stephen to Sussex.

Working under a Program Management structure, patient care is delivered by an interdisciplinary team that includes a clinical head, program administrative director, physicians, nurses, social workers, discharge planning officers, respiratory therapists and other allied health professionals.

Family Medicine, in conjunction with the Department of Medicine, has embarked on a "Hospitalist" pilot project.  This will offer a team approach to inpatient care, with the involvement of Family Medicine, Internal Medicine and Nursing Staff working together to provide the best of care to patients.

Family Medicine is an active participant in the Post Graduate Medical Education Program with Dalhousie University Medical School. Thirty-one Family Physicians hold faculty appointments and some serve on various committees (Undergraduate, Selection, Postgraduate, Curriculum Planning, etc.). Residents are taught primarily in Ambulatory settings, supplemented by Clinics, Practice-Based Small Group Learning Sessions, Seminars, weekly Teaching Rounds, Educational Workshops, Half-Day Back Program, etc.  Each faculty member participates in one or more of the above.

Health promotion and wellness activities, funded by AHSC’s Board of Trustees, include the Lung Education Program available to patients at all facilities, and a scent-free environment on all nursing units -- a Corporation-wide policy.
