The AHSC Emergency Medicine Program spans five hospital facilities. Collectively, there are approximately 150,000 patient visits per year. The individual Emergency Departments may be categorized using Health and Welfare Canada’s guide entitled “Emergency Units in Hospitals”.

Saint John Regional Hospital Emergency Department

Tertiary site and provincial referral centre for cardiac and neurosurgery services

St. Joseph’s Hospital Urgent Care Centre

(Sussex - Hours of operation 24 hours/day, seven days a week)

The Emergency Department is one of two primary sites for Emergency Medicine residency training at Dalhousie University. Four trainees each year complete rounds at AHSC facilities, spending at least 50 per cent of their residency experience at Saint John Regional Hospital. The Department has formal educational opportunities for undergraduate and post-graduate physicians which all contribute to the enrichment of an academic milieu.

Trauma Orientation Nursing Manual The Trauma Competency Based Orientation Manual was developed in response to a need expressed by emergency nurses in our health care region. The purpose of the manual is to provide a resource and a guide to be used in the orientation process. Trauma nurses that are confident and competent in all aspects of trauma care are one of the key players in our dynamic trauma team. All proceeds go towards Trauma Education within Atlantic Health Sciences Corporation.
