AMBULATORY CLINICS

Ambulatory Care has evolved since the early sixties when the concept of outpatients coming to hospital for non-urgent treatment was an extension of the Emergency Department. Gradually it became apparent that patient numbers for this type of service were increasing and that ambulatory care needed to become a distinct and separate service.

Today, much of the work done by internal medicine specialists is outpatient in nature and may involve diagnostic clinics, follow-up clinics or treatment intervention clinics. Patients may receive outpatient service in an ambulatory clinic setting at the Saint John Regional Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Charlotte County Hospital and the Sussex Health Centre. This is a dynamic and fast paced environment with new clinics and services opening each year. The types of clinics offered at each site can vary. Patients must be referred by a Physician to access clinic appointments.
