Talk with Me

Community-Based Speech-Language Pathology Services for Preschoolers

The "Talk With Me" Early Language services is a community-based program focusing on promoting healthy communication skills and preventing communication delays in all children from birth to age 5. The program is designed to support families and caregivers in preparing their children to learn. Speech-Language Pathologists and Rehabilitation Assistants working in this setting have the unique opportunity to work closely with children, parents/caregivers, daycare workers, Early Interventionists, Public Health Nurses, and other community partners involved with the preschool population. The Early Language Services operates through an open-referral system, accepting referrals for Speech-Language Pathology service from anyone involved in the care of the child. Clinicians provide a wide range of services, which include:

  • Identification sessions/screening (i.e. speech and language screening)
  • Parent education sessions (e.g. Developing Pre-reading Skills, ")
  • Parent-child groups (e.g.  "Play to Learn", "Wee Words, “Mother Goose", “Read to Me”)
  • Speech and Language In-services to Community Partners

Depending on the needs of the child, SLPs working with the Early Language Services may arrange for additional therapeutic services at a hospital facility.
