HOSPITAL BASED SERVICES

Referrals

Facilty-based SLP referrals in Region 2 are accepted from Physicians, Audiologists, the Early Language Program, and other SLPs for outpatient children. Hospital inpatients and adult outpatient referrals are accepted from Physicians only.

  • Diagnostic evaluation and treatment of Speech, Language, Voice, Swallowing, and Fluency (i.e. Stuttering) disorders
  • Parent Training Programs (eg: It Takes Two To Talk Program)
  • Neonatal Infant Follow-Up Program
  • Cleft Palate Clinic
  • Developmental Clinic
  • Feeding Clinic
  • Spina Bifida Clinic
  • Preschool Language Therapy Group
  • Home Programs
  • Counselling regarding communcation disorders and their prevention
  • Public education on topics related to speech and language

Speech-Language Pathology Services are offered in the following locations

  • St. Joseph's Hospital
  • Sussex Health Centre
  • Charlotte County Hospital
  • Fundy Health Centre (one day weekly)
  • Hampton (one day weekly)
  • Grand Bay (one day weekly)
  • Grand Manan (one day/month)
  • Centracare

The following are examples of the types of disorders treated in our Facilities and Clinics:

Voice

  • hoarseness from over use of the larynx (i.e. vocal cords)
  • laryngectomy (i.e surgical removal of the voicebox)
  • hypernasality (eg: cleft palate)

Stuttering

  • interruption in the flow of speech (i.e. repetition of sounds - "ba ba blue")

Phonology/Articulation

  • delay in learning the correct pronunciation of speech sounds

Language Delay

  • difficulty understanding and/or using words and sentences
  • late talker

Language Disorder

  • unusual use of language (i.e. "echoing" used by some people who have Autism)

Aural Habilitation

  • development of speech and language skills in hearing impaired children and those with cochlear implants

Aphasia and Apraxia

  • speech and language disorders due to brain damage (i.e stroke)

Swallowing

  • feeding difficulties
  • swallowing difficulties
  • difficulty chewing and/or swallowing food and difficulty accepting different textures

Other Difficulties include

  • oral/motor: slurred speech, difficulty moving tongue/lips
  • head injury
