Electronystagmography (ENG)

ENG is used with other tests to identify disease or disorders causing dizziness or vertigo.
ENG may cause dizziness and/or nausea. Patients should limit food intake prior to the examination and arrange for transportation after the examination. Please check with your doctor if you are taking any medications.
Five sticker electrodes are placed around the eyes to record their movement. The eye movements indicate how well the inner ear works. The inner ear helps regulate your system of balance.

Measurements are taken as you focus on red lights and as you lie down in different positions. Throughout parts of the test, the room may be darkened and you will be asked to close your eyes. Toward the end of the test, warm air and occasionally ice water will be placed in your ear canals. It is common to feel dizzy from this part of the test. If you do experience dizziness, it usually passes quickly.
