About our Unit |
|
| ► No Smoking as per hospital policy. | |
| ► No Live Flowers or Plants on this unit in particular due to allergies. Sorry for the inconvenience. |
|
| ► Scent free environment as per hospital policy. | |
| ► Visiting hours 2:30PM - 8:30PM. | |
| ► Rehabilitation Philosophy: your nursing staff and physio staff will be getting you up and this is hard work. We do expect you to work with us and try to help yourself. It can be painful, however, with pain medication and ice, you will be able to move easier. The goal is to look after yourself as you did before. An example of the rehabilitation philosophy is if you normally go to the bathroom in the middle of the night at home, you will be walking to the bathroom at night in the hospital for reconditioning purposes. The first night you may need a bedpan but by the second or third, you will be assisted to the bathroom. | |
| ► Call bells: It is human nature for everyone to need the nurse at the same time for bathroom trips. Use your bell early before you have to go urgently! We do our best to get to everyone. We encourage you to use your bell and ask for assistance so that you do not fall especially in the first few days. | |
►
Proper footwear is a must and if instructed to use a walker please USE IT!
Some think the bathroom is nearby and they have fallen on the way. Although every
hospital unit is busy, never feel like you are bothering the nurse. We would rather
have you recover safely than fall. NEVER should you get up alone on the
first day post-op.

|
| ► Calls to the Unit and the Protection of Personal Information Act of New Brunswick: We adhere to the New Brunswick Privacy Act and do not give out patient information over the phone. Please make your friends and relatives aware of this and remember, you can hook up a bedside phone and have them call you direct if that is your preference. | |
| ► Belongings and Valuables: You are encouraged to leave your valuables at home. Otherwise, valuables can be locked up in the cashiers’ office on level 2 across from the orange elevator. The hospital does not assume responsibility for your belongings and valuables. We encourage you to get your dentures and glasses labeled with your name prior to surgery, and keep them in your bedside table each night when in the hospital. You can call your denturist to find out about labeling. Wedding bands may be taped to your finger if you wish to leave them on during surgery. We suggest that you leave all belongings out in the car until you are finished in recovery room and move to your hospital room on orthopaedics. At that time, your “support buddy” can go to the car and retrieve belongings. | |
| ► Pastoral Care: Hospital Chaplains are available to all patients. Please ask your nurse if you would like to talk to pastoral care representatives. | |
►
Telephone/Televisions/Newspapers: If you are interested in TV service
to your bedside, there are order forms located on the orthopaedics unit. Once
you complete an order form, a TV service representative will come during the
evening to visit you and set up your television. Ask your patient service worker
for assistance if needed. For telephone service just pick up the bedside phone
and follow the automated instructions. Newspapers can be purchased at level 1
gift shop.
|
|
►
Meals: Your meals will be delivered to your room by dietary staff shortly
after 8:00AM, 12:00 noon, and 5:00PM. The patient service worker will deliver
your meal tray and briefly assist you in opening any containers. Food choices
will be provided and dieticians are available on request to meet your nutritional
needs and discuss any concerns you may have.
|
|
| ► The Cafeteria and Coffee Shop: The cafeteria and coffee shop are located on level 2. The cafeteria hours of operation are 10:30-2:00PM, 3:00-6:00PM daily. Note: CLOSED between 2:00-3:00PM. The Coffee Shop hours are 6:45AM-10:30PM daily. | |
| ► Discharge: When you are ready to go home, a staff member or volunteer will help you to the door. Do not leave without telling your nurse. | |
