During your stay, you will be cared for by Physicians, Residents,
Nurse Associate, Physiotherapy, RNs, LPNs, and
PSWs and the Ward Clerk. This team works collaboratively to provide
your care. Other specialty areas may be involved as well such as social work,
extra mural hospital, dietitian and other departments.
Unit Manager

The Unit Manager is a RN whose role is to support the team in every way. This may be through
providing equipment, scheduling staff, continuing education, monitoring the competency of
staff, addressing questions, comments from patients and more. She reports on several
operational aspects of the unit.

Registered Nurses
|
|

|
May be your primary caregiver or work together with the LPN to provide care.
Is responsible for your medication needs and will do an in-depth assessment
when called upon. Will do tasks such as assessments, hygiene, dressing changes
and mobilizing. Will consult with the Surgeons and other departments. There is
a Registered Nurse assigned as Charge each shift.

Orderly/Licensed Practical Nurse
|
|

The Licensed Practical Nurse or Orderly will conduct assessments, basic care such
as hygiene, toileting, mobilizing and consult with the RN when needed.
|
Patient Service Worker
|
|

|
The Patient Service Worker will perform tasks such as passing your dinner
trays, keep your room sanitary, clean your room after discharge and help
move patients to new rooms on our unit when needed. The PSW will also
answer calls for fluids, blankets, or other simple comforts.
|
Physiotherapist
|
|

|
The Physiotherapist is specially trained to assess your rehabilitation needs
for a speedy recovery! They will teach exercises and positioning for your
specific surgery or body. They will advise what you will need for discharge home
ie. Crutches, walker
|
Physio Assistant
|
|

|
These specially trained LPN’s will assist in your road to recovery by helping
you to mobilize and gain independence. They are your personal trainers and
will walk with you providing safety and encouragement.
|
Nurse Associate
|
|

|
Our Nurse Associate visits Orthopaedic patients. She is a resource for the
RNs and may order various tests and communicates progress or complications
to the Physicians.
|
Ward Clerk
|
|

|
The ward clerk will help direct visitors. She sits at the end of the
desk near room 60. She does a variety of tasks supporting the
employees such as paperwork, phone calls, communications and more!!
|
Orthopaedic Surgeons
|
|

|
Our Orthopaedic Surgeons are a dedicated group. You may have one
Surgeon operate or a team of Surgeons. Your Orthopaedic surgeon
will monitor your progress and order necessary treatments for a
smooth recovery. The Orthopaedic Surgeons work in clinics at the
SJRH, St. Joseph’s, Sussex, and Charlotte County hospitals. They
also work in various operating suites in Region 2. They have patient
appointments in their offices as well. The Physicians are involved
in teaching and often are invited to speak at various educational
sessions in hospital or community, as well as nationally.

Occupational Therapist
|
|

The occupational therapist will show you how to use special equipment to
make dressing, feeding, toileting, and bathing yourself easier. They will
give you important information on how to protect your hip, back or knee
after the surgery. They can also visit your home and give advice such as
what type of chair to use and what changes you can make in your bathroom
to help live easier after the surgery. They help you with back care advice
and know how to customize a splint to your physical needs. The goal of
the occupational therapy department is to have you doing as much as possible
for yourself in the easiest way possible after surgery. Not all patients
will see the occupational therapist, however, if you have any questions,
please ask.

Other disciplines
|

At any time there may be other types of staff at the desk. These may be social
workers, occupational therapists, dieticians, other Family Doctors, Respiratory
therapists and more! They work with us but do not remain on our unit. They may
come just to see one particular patient for example. They may not be able to
answer visitor questions who approach the desk, it may be more helpful for you
to address the ward clerk or charge nurse.
We often have BN student nurses and LPN students, along with their
Instructors working on our unit. All employees, including students,
will have a nametag on with their designation on it for you to see.
