How to prevent
- Continue your leg exercises as in hospital
- Continue to increase your level of activity/move about
- It is normal to have some pain and swelling but as days go by, the pain and swelling should get less and less
- Wear special tight stockings ordered by your doctor
Signs and symptoms of a blood clot in the leg
- More and more swelling in lower leg (operative leg)
- More and more pain and tenderness in lower leg
- Lower leg may become hot and red
What to do
- CALL the doctor’s office who did the surgery and let them know
- OR call your family doctor
- IF after hours, call TELECARE at 1-800-244-8353, or make an appointment at an after hours clinic
Prevention
- Move about/ do exercises learned in
- Wear special tight stockings ordered by your doctor

- Cough [new onset]
- Extreme shortness of breath
- Wheezing [new onset]
- Blood in your phlegm
- Fever
- Extreme sweating [at rest]
- Confusion [new onset]
- Extreme pain when taking deep breath in
What to do
- CALL the TELECARE hotline 1-800-244-8353
- OR proceed to the hospital Emergency Room
Preventive Measures
- Ask your doctor when you can start to shower again.
- Do not soak in bath until your doctor says it’s okay.
- Do not rub creams or ointments on incision without checking with doctor first.
- Do not pick dry areas and scabs.
Signs and Symptoms
- More and more redness around the wound.
- Swelling in area of wound.
- Fever.
- More and more liquid drainage coming from your wound.
- The color of the drainage starting to look yellow or green.
- Hard to put weight on the sore leg.
- More and more pain that is hard to control.
