The Sussex Community Mental Health Centre is a community based service with clinical and outreach programs. The Centre's programs are delivered by professional staff which includes nurses, psychologists, social workers, psychiatrists, and outreach workers.

Our goal is to meet the needs of the individual and community providing them with a network of services and supports. Outreach extends even into homes, where the centre seeks alternatives to hospitalization for its patients. This reflects a province-wide approach to mental health care where the community is mobilized to help individuals gain control over their own lives.

Adult Services

Acute and Long-term Services

Our adult team offers both acute and long-term mental health services. Depending on the needs of the individual, services may include assessment, psychiatric consultation, monitoring of medications, counseling, individual, family or group therapy. We endeavor to work closely with our clients to develop the treatment plan that is best for them, and work closely with members of the family, family physicians, inpatient hospital services and other agencies.

Emergency Services

Should an emergency requiring mental health involvement arise, a member of our staff is available to see clients on an emergency basis. Outside regular office hours, a member of our professional staff is on call for emergencies and may be contacted by calling (506) 432-2090. The call will be relayed to the person on call. It is important to remember that this is an emergency service and needs to be kept open for those who are in need of immediate assistance.

Outreach Services

Outreach services include a number of interventions with clients aimed at improving their social and recreational involvement in the community. Outreach workers nurture the mental, physical, and social well-being of the client through good times and bad. Outreach workers support the clients' relationship with service providers and with the community.

Activity Centre

The Sussex and Area Activity Centre provides support to consumers of Mental Health Services. The purpose of the centre is to improve the quality of life for adult mental health consumers through social recreational and educational activities and to promote public awareness of the concerns and needs of the members. The Centre is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information about the Centre, call Sussex Mental Health Services at (506) 432-2090 or (506) 433-1828.

Critical Incident Response Team

Staff from Sussex Community Mental Health Services are a part of one of thirteen teams province-wide involved in Critical Incident Stress Management. Made up of professionals and peers trained to conduct debriefings of critical incidents, the team works primarily with emergency personnel (i.e. firefighters, police, ambulance attendants, search & rescue workers) to assist with the unusually strong emotional response that critical incidents can evoke.

Suicide Prevention Committee

The Sussex and Area Suicide Prevention Committee is associated with Community Mental Health Services. It is the aim of the committee to educate the community about suicide. The committee organizes workshops and other educational events, and prepares resources, including the Suicide Prevention Directory, a reference guide of available resources within the community.

Child and Adolescent Services

Acute and Long-term Services

The child and adolescent team works within a family systems approach, while maintaining a commitment to working in the manner that will be most helpful to the child and those who love him or her. We place the highest importance on working with families, and on honoring the strengths and values of the family. Depending on the needs of the situation we will see families, parents, siblings or individuals. Children may be seen for play therapy or in groups. Where appropriate, sessions may be held in the office, at school, at home, or wherever is most likely to be beneficial to our clients. We work hard to maintain close working relationships with schools, physicians and other service providers.

Community Involvement

Members of the child and adolescent team are active in a number of community initiatives, including the Kings County Family Resource Center and the Provincial Youth Treatment Program. The Kings County Family Resource Center maintains a number of programs to educate and support parents and families. The Provincial Youth Treatment Program (YTP) is a joint program of several government departments to co-ordinate services for children with disruptive behavior problems.

Referrals

We will accept referrals on an individual basis from any member of the community. However, it must be recognized that services cannot be offered to an adult without that person's consent, nor to a child under the age of 16 without the consent of the child's legal parent.

The easiest way to refer is to phone (506) 432-2090 and ask to make a referral. The basic information about the person referred and the reason for referral will be noted.

Emergency situations will be seen for service immediately. Less urgent situations will require an Intake/Screening interview, which will normally be arranged with an intake worker within a couple of weeks. Following this interview, appropriate assignment to our psychiatrist, a professional therapist or an outreach worker will be made. Clients whose situations are not urgent may need to wait for services as those whose situations require us get involved quickly are seen sooner. We appreciate receiving updates as the situations change.
