EducationPreparing Tomorrow’s Health Care Professionals The need to develop and retain quality staff with the necessary up-to-date knowledge and skills is one of the principle concerns of Region B Mental Health Services. A proactive approach to staff education is vital to maintaining a high quality of clinical care. We offer a range of educational opportunities within the context of Mental Health /Mental Illness. Every effort is made to meet the educational /experiential needs of students. Medical Education Program
Our focus on continuing education is significantly enhanced by the Atlantic Health Sciences Corporation (AHSC) (Region B) Medical Education Program. AHSC is formally affiliated with both Dalhousie and Memorial University. The Department of Psychiatry has well established residency and clinical clerk training programs in collaboration with these universities. We offer a wide range of psychiatric educational opportunities and strive to meet the unique educational needs of our students. We offer a practical clinical experience in a variety of contexts including Inpatient Acute Unit, Short Stay Unit, Community Mental Health Clinic, Child and Adolescent Mental Health, Emergency Mental Health Services, Consultation Liaison Service, Mobile Mental Health Crisis Service, Rehabilitation/Long term Care, Geriatric Psychiatry and Addictions. We provide a formal didactic lecture series as well as weekly interviews skills training. We are also very proud of our new initiatives which include the development of a Shared Care collaboration relationship with our family medicine colleagues at the community health center. Education for Other Health Care Professionals The AHSC formally partners with other educational institutions as well (such as University of New Brunswick and New Brunswick Community College). These affiliations allow us the opportunity to take part in training students from other branches of medicine and other disciplines. Historically, mental health services support students at all levels of mental health education including basic undergraduate, graduate and doctoral level studies. Our faculty is very enthusiastic and dedicated and has also been actively involved in providing ongoing continuing medical education sessions for our colleagues in other fields. Continuing Education for Psychiatrists and Other Health Care Professionals Learning opportunity are available on a regular basis including Journal Club and Case Conference weekly. Grand Rounds is usually held monthly and is open to those interested from other clinical programs. These events are accredited Group Learning Activities as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Opportunities (requests) occur on a regular basis for staff of Mental Health Services to actively assist in meeting educational needs that have been identified by other clinical programs/areas. |
