The Extra-Mural Program has a limited program for the provision of
prescription medications to clients. The restrictions to receiving
benefits from the Program are:
-
The Extra-Mural Program is the payer of last resort. Clients
who have an insurance plan that provides coverage for
medications are required to use it.
-
The program only covers medications required for the client’s course of
treatment which are related to the reason for admission.
-
Only sufficient medication, to sustain the client for the expected
duration of services, is provided.
-
Each client is required to pay the pharmacy an amount equivalent to the
Provincial Prescription Drug Program co-payment amount. In cases of
financial hardship this requirement may be reviewed on a case by case basis.
The drug program is administered for the Extra-Mural Program by Blue Cross of
Atlantic Canada and follows the same rules as used by the Provincial
Prescription Drug Program. Clients obtain their medications from the pharmacy of
their choice. On a monthly basis Blue Cross invoices the Program for medications
dispensed to Extra-Mural clients during the reporting period.
