Partner in Care

It is important that you become as independent as possible with your health care needs. We understand that you may be concerned with this responsibility. We will teach and help you or your delegate until we are all satisfied that you can provide the care. As soon as you can manage on your own or your health care needs cease to exist, we will discharge you from our service. We will discuss this with you in advance.

Equipment

If you need some special equipment we will help you get it.

Medications

You will be required to use your health insurance to pay for any medications you need.

Laboratory Specimens

We will draw blood for testing as ordered by your doctor. You must then make sure that the samples get to the laboratory. Please arrange with a family member, friend, or taxi if you cannot do this yourself.

Environment

The health and safety of our staff is important to us. Please keep pets restrained or in another room when we are in your home. It would also be appreciated if you did not smoke while staff are visiting.

You will be receiving Extra-Mural Services because you and / or your doctor have agreed that your health care needs can be met in your own home, with help from our staff.

One of our staff members will assess your needs for care. We will work out a plan with you to meet these needs. We will keep in touch with your doctor about your care.

The N. B. Extra-Mural Program include nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, respiratory therapists, dietitians, and social workers. Depending on the care you need one or more of these health professionals will visit you.

Each professional helps you in different ways:

  • Nurses provide those services that need special nursing skills or procedures. Nurses also provide care and support to those who are dying or who wish to die at home.

  • Respiratory Therapists help you and your family to prevent and treat your breathing problems.

  • Physiotherapists help you to prevent or improve pain or problems with your mobility, caused by injury, illness, disease or poor lifestyle choices.

  • Occupational Therapists look at how you are managing daily activities in your home, school, or workplace. They know about equipment or methods that will help you to continue doing these things as safely and independently as possible.

  • Speech-Language Pathologists help when there are concerns with your speech and language understanding. They also help with health problems that limit your ability to safely swallow.

  • Dietitians help people understand the role of food and nutrition during health and illness. They help you to plan or change your eating habits to meet your health needs.

  • Social Workers help you and your family with practical personal or emotional problems which may arise from living with illness.

We provide care on a visit basis. They will not be in your home 24 hours per day. If a staff member is late in visiting you it is usually because an earlier visit to another patient has taken longer than planned.

We are pleased to be your partner in your care.
