Preparing for Your Hospital Stay: What You Should Bring

Medicare and Insurance

You must bring your current Medicare card and proof of any other medical insurance.  The Medicare Plan, Worker's Compensation Plan and the Department of Veterans Affairs provide Standard Ward coverage for those who are eligible. Patients requesting private or semi-private rooms are required to pay a fee on admission, one week in advance and each week during your stay. Requests for private and semi-private rooms will be granted, based on availability.

Medications

Bring all the medications you are taking regularly at home. Give them to your nurse for safekeeping. They will be used to determine your medication orders and you may be asked to use your home medications while in hospital. Bring a list of medications to which you are allergic or sensitive.

You should not take your own medications while a patient in hospital without the knowledge and consent of your doctor and nursing staff.

Toilet Articles/Health Aids to bring with you from home

  • facial tissues
  • soap, shampoo
  • toothbrush, toothpaste
  • brush, comb
  • shaving articles (battery operated electric razors allowed, except in Intensive Care Units)
  • deodorant
  • If you wear dentures, a denture cup or a suitable plastic container with a lid
  • If you wear eyeglasses, or a hearing aid, bring them with you as well as a container for storage.

Clothing

Storage space is limited, so please bring as few items as possible. Some units require that clothing items be labeled, if possible. These would include:

  • pajamas
  • underclothing
  • slippers
  • housecoat or dressing gown

Other items to bring with you

You are welcome to bring your own pillow and an extra blanket. You may also wish to bring:

  • a clock,
  • pen,
  • paper,
  • stamps, and
  • clothes for you to wear home.

The hospital cannot be responsible for loss or damage to personal items.

Valuables:

You should not bring a large amount of money, jewelry, or expensive clothing. We suggest that no more than $10.00 be kept at your bedside. For your convenience, safety deposit boxes (SDB) are located in the Admitting Department. The SDB are available to inpatients wishing to place personal items such as wallets, credit cards, and jewelry in safekeeping. The SDB are accessible to patients admitted or discharged 24 hours per day. During your inpatient stay, you may add or withdraw items from your SDB between the ours of 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.

If you are physically unable to bring your items to a SDB, a nurse may bring your items to Cashier’s Office between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. or a designate may bring your items to the Admitting Department. The nurse or designate delivering items on your behalf will receive a receipt for your items. For your protection, you must present this receipt in order to access your belongings. Items brought to Admitting will be transferred to the Cashier’s Office when normal operating hours resume. Please remember that you may access items held in the Cashier’s Office only between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. weekdays. If expecting to be discharged, please make necessary arrangements in advance for return of your items.
