Saint John Regional Hospital

The Saint John Regional Hospital opened in 1982 after ten years of planning and construction. The new hospital replaced the former Saint John General Hospital, the West Saint John Community Hospital, and the former Provincial Laboratory. The Saint John Regional Hospital (SJRH) is the ‘flag ship’ of the highly integrated network that is AHSC.  Its staff members take pride in providing leadership to the region and the province of New Brunswick through active involvement in teaching, research and patient care in secondary and highly specialized tertiary services. As anchor facility for AHSC, this 473 bed hospital provides generalized and specialized health care services for Regional Health Authority 2.

Admitting

Patients will be notified by the Admitting Office when to report to the hospital. The Admitting Office is located in the main lobby. If the patient to be admitted is under 16 years of age, a parent or legal guardian must sign any forms for pre-admission for treatment.

Book Cart

Volunteers take magazines, paperback novels, and puzzles to units for patients’ enjoyment. Please leave your name with the unit clerk if you would like any of these items.

Cafeteria

The main cafeteria on the second floor is open to the public from 10:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. seven days a week. It offers short order items, hot meals, soup and salad bar, as well as a complete selection of bottled beverages. 

Coffee Shop/Fast Food

In cooperation with Tim Hortons, the fast food area offers soup/salad, sandwiches, garlic fingers, pizza, desserts and beverages. Hours of operation are 6:45 a.m. – 10:30 p.m. seven days a week.

Discharge Information

Every effort will be made to arrange your discharge before 11 a.m. You will be advised about your discharge date in time to make advance arrangements for someone to pick you up.  Please make sure you have all your belongings as well as aftercare instructions, prescriptions, and appointments as needed. If you are going to be discharged over the weekend, please ensure that all valuables have been collected by Friday at 4:00 p.m.

Directions to Hospital

Take exit 123 (Somerset Street) from Highway 1. Heading west, turn right off the exit; heading east, turn left. Turn left on Somerset Street and follow signs to Millidgeville (note green and white sign indicating "Hospital"). Proceed straight through three sets of lights. The fourth major intersection is at Somerset Street and Samuel Davis Drive. Turn right, proceed up the hill, past University Avenue. Turn left on Tucker Park Road. Bear left, and proceed straight to the main entrance of the Hospital.

Education

Patient education programs may be available on in-house regional television. Please inquire at your nursing station.

Fire Safety

Fire alarms are tested regularly to maintain them in good working order. An announcement will be made when the alarm test is over.

Fire exits are clearly marked throughout the building. During a fire alarm, elevators in that area are shut down. All fire doors automatically close until there is an ALL CLEAR announcement on the speaker system. During a fire alarm, stay in your area. Do not move to another place unless a member of the Fire Department or hospital staff member directs you.

Flowers

Volunteers deliver flowers and fruit baskets Monday to Friday from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. and Saturday from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Flowers may be purchased or ordered through the Old General Store in the main lobby. In compliance with AHSC’s Scent Reduction Policy, we ask that you check with your florist to avoid ordering strongly scented flowers.

Gift Shop

A Gift Shop is located in the main lobby on Level 1. This shop is owned and operated by the Saint John Regional Hospital Auxiliary. All profits are used for patient comfort and hospital equipment. Patients, staff, and visitors are welcome. Room service is available for patients who cannot leave their rooms.  The Gift Shop offers a wide range of products – books, magazines, greeting cards, snacks, cold drinks, personal-care items, flowers, giftware for everyday and special occasions, lottery tickets and much more. Telephone orders (648-6691) are accepted for hospital deliveries. Visa, Master card, and Interac/debit card are accepted. Hours of operation are: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Saturday, Sunday, and Holidays 12:00 Noon until 5:00 p.m.

Hair Care

Hair Kair Korner is open Tuesday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. One or more certified stylists staff this service, which is owned and operated by the Saint John Regional Hospital Auxiliary. Conveniently located on 3 C South, patients and visitors may arrange for hairdressing services by calling extension 6546 to make an appointment. Hair Kair Korner also provides in-room service to hospital patients.

Health Records

Your Health Record is the property of AHSC. If you are required to access information from your health record, please inform your Doctor or Nurse, if you are an inpatient. If you require access to information from your health record after discharge, please contact the Health Records Department at (506) 648-6975. Please allow time for this to be arranged. Charges may apply, depending upon the type of information you require.

ID Bracelet

The identification bracelet that you receive on admission to the hospital is to be worn at all times during your hospital stay.

In-Patient Accounts

The Medicare Plan, Worker's Compensation Plan and the Department of Veterans Affairs provide Standard Ward coverage for those who are eligible.  You may wish to upgrade your room to:

  • Semi-private with two patient beds in one room. This upgrade costs $65.00 per day.
  • Private room with one patient in a room. This upgrade costs $75.00 per day.

It is your responsibility to check your insurance coverage before coming to the hospital. Your New Brunswick Medicare does not cover the cost of an upgraded room. Your insurance company may cover all, or part of an upgraded room. If your insurance does not cover an upgraded room, you are responsible for these costs. Please avoid the anxiety of an unexpected bill by verifying your insurance coverage before requesting an upgraded room.

If you decide to change your room request while you are here, please go to the Admitting Department to sign a Payment Responsibility Form. If you are unable to go to the Admitting Department, please call Financial Services at 648-6945.

Interpreters 

If you would like an interpreter, talk to your health care provider and this will be arranged.

Lost and Found

Lost and found articles are turned in to the Department of Safety Services, Level ,. If you have lost or found articles in the hospital, you may call 648-6614.

Lounges

Lounges are available on each patient floor for the use of patients and their visitors.

Ask your friends and relatives to send mail, clearly marked, to:

Advise people to write a return address on the envelopes. Mail is delivered once a day. There is a Canada Post mailbox at the main entrance. Stamps are available from the Gift Shop in the main lobby (by book only, not individually). Mail that is received after you leave the hospital will be sent to your home.

Meals

Breakfast is served to patients between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. Lunch is served between 11:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. and supper is served between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. Note: Tray or buffet service is available on certain units where patients are able and interested in dining in a small cafeteria setting on the unit.

Newspapers and magazines

These are available for purchase at the Gift Shop on Level 1. Newspapers are also available from coin-operated machines.

Organ and/or Tissue Donation

Parking

A public parking lot is available across from the hospital at a cost of: $1.25/hour, $6./day, $15. for 7 days, $25. for 15 days, and $45. for 30 days.

Parking passes are available at the Cashier’s Office in the Lobby or at the ticket booth as you exit the parking lot. Wheelchair parking is available at the Emergency Department entrance.

Spiritual and Religious Care

Pastoral care visitors and clergy are available to offer spiritual care during the day and are on call after hours. The Multi Faith Chapel is always open for private prayer and meditation, or formal worship and is located on the Mezzanine, Level 2, by the Cafeteria.

For your Safety

The front doors of the Hospital are locked at 9:00 p.m. Staff may access employee entrances using ID cards. Visitors coming to nursing units after 9:00 p.m. visitors may enter through the Emergency entrance and report to Safety Services. The nursing unit will be contacted to ensure the visitor is expected.

We have cameras and security guards all around the hospital for your protection. All hospital staff wear identification badges with pictures. You should not go with any person who does not have a badge. Parents should not let anyone take their child without going along.

Telephones, Televisions, Radios

Telephones are available in all patients’ rooms, except for intensive care units. Aliant Telecom will bill your home number for this service. Please remember to notify Aliant Telecom when you are discharged in order to avoid further charges. Instructions are on the telephone. All patient owned electronic devices (computers, games, radios etc) must be inspected by the Biomedical Engineering Department to ensure safety for in-hospital use, and any possibility of interference with sensitive hospital equipment. Electric heating pads and blankets are not permitted as they do not meet CSA standards for hospitals. Battery radios with earphones that have been approved are acceptable. If you want to rent a TV set, please complete the brochure located near the nursing station.

Cellular phones interfere with hospital electronics and must be turned off in patient care areas.

Transportation

The Saint John Regional Hospital is on a major bus route that is served by City Transit. Please check at the Information Kiosk in the lobby for the bus schedule.

Volunteers

Volunteers are a valued resource. Ladies wear peach smocks and gentlemen wear dark blue smocks so that they are easy to identify. Volunteers deliver newspapers, flowers and fruit baskets to patients. They run the book cart and also visit long-term and out-of-town patients. If you would like someone to stop by for a chat or to play a game of cards, please leave your name with the Ward Clerk on your unit

If you, or a member of your family are interested in becoming a volunteer, application forms are available in the Volunteer Office on level 0 of B tower.
