Evaluating Websites

The sites listed here are not part of the AHSC web site. We believe that you will find these sites useful as you look for answers to your questions about your own and your family's health concerns.

Web site ownership and content can change very quickly. If you visit a web site for the first time, or if you haven't been to the site for a while, make sure it will provide you with reliable and trustworthy information.

Do this by asking these questions:

  • Who owns the web site? Make sure you can find out who runs the web site, and what credentials they have for providing health information. Look for a section called "About us", or "Who we are".
  • Who wrote the content of the site? Authors and contributors should be named and their affiliations and credentials should be provided. If health information is being given by non-healthcare professionals, this should be clearly indicated to site visitors.
  • Are there references and citations at the end of an article? These help you to judge the scientific basis of the information given, and give you more resources to learn about the topic.
  • Is the content up to date? The site should show when the content of each page was written or reviewed and updated

It is a good idea to share the information you find with your health professional, to help you make the best decisions regarding your health.
