Injuries can spoil winter fun. Each year, hundreds of Canadian children are admitted to hospital with head injuries and broken bones due to winter recreational mishaps. Winter, with its cold and stormy weather, presents additional safety challenges to all ages.

The Trauma Program at AHSC and the Department of Public Safety have recognized the need to develop and deliver winter safety education to elementary students in Region 2. Partnerships were formed with the local police force, RCMP, Sheriff’s Office, and Family and Community Services to assist in program delivery.

Our annual "Winter Safety Week" is held in January. Each year over 3000 Grade 2 students in our health care region receive a one-hour presentation on safe winter practices. This presentation includes information on road safety, recreation safety, frostbite and hypothermia. In an effort to reinforce this message, the children are encouraged to design a group poster displaying the safety practices they have learned. These posters are displayed throughout the community. Three winning posters are chosen and prizes donated by local sponsors are presented to the school. Click here to view "Winter Safety 2008" winners.
