Ibuprofen
Adults and children over 45 lbs (22.5 kg):
Used for relief of headache, toothache, menstrual pain, mild pain in muscles, joints
and back, fever. Adults and children over 45 lbs (22.5 kg) can take 1 or 2 pills
(200mg to 400mg) every 4 hours as needed. No more than 6 pills should be taken
within a 24-hour period, unless you have checked with your doctor.
Children under 45 lbs (22.5 kg):
Used for relief of fever and pain caused by colds, sore
throats, immunizations and earaches. See attached dosing tables for
correct amount to give your child. Always check
with your doctor or a pharmacist to find out how often you can give
ibuprofen to your child.
Do not give ibuprofen to children who may be dehydrated (not
enough fluids) due to vomiting, diarrhea or not drinking enough.
Do not take if you:
- Are allergic to aspirin
- Have an active ulcer in your digestive tract (i.e. stomach)
- Have bleeding from your gastrointestinal system (stomach, intestines)
- Have history of angioedema syndrome
- Have nasal polyps
- Have problems breathing when you take aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
- Have lupus — unless your doctor O.K.'s it.
- Are taking blood thinners.
You should check with your doctor before taking ibuprofen if you have:
- Kidney problems
- Liver disease
- Congestive heart failure
- High blood pressure and taking a fluid pill
What is the right amount of ibuprofen?
Adults and children over 45 lbs (22.5 kg)::
1 or 2 pills (200 to 400 mg) every 4 hours as you need it. Do not take
anymore than 6 pills in 24 hours, unless the doctor tells you it is O.K.
Children 45 lbs (22.5 kg):
Children under 2 years old may have 5 mg/kg every 6 to 8 hours as needed up
to 3 doses in 24 hours. Make sure you shake the liquid ibuprofen well.
For children over 2 years and 10.8 kg they may have 10 mg/kg.
Advil Children's Suspension: 20 mg in each 1 ml of suspension.

If your child's weight is between numbers give the smaller amount (i.e. 3.5 kg: give 15 mg not 20 mg).
