The Board of Directors of Atlantic Health Sciences Corporation held its regular monthly meeting April 30, 2007 at the Royal Canadian Legion, Norton. The following are highlights of that meeting:

Methadone Update

Margorie Mullin and Cynthia Boyd from Ridgewood Addictions Services provided Board members with an update on the Methadone Clinic. Mullin explained that two years ago, four methadone clinics were established in New Brunswick, one at Ridgewood Addictions Services. “At that time we had 84 people on the active waiting list in this region,” she said. “Phase 1 of Methadone stabilization requires participants to have weekly physician appointments, group and individual counseling and weekly/random drug screening. This phase will take an average of three months to complete.” Since its inception the Methadone Program has admitted 212 clients. “We currently have 84 clients on an active wait list and 102 clients on an inactive wait list,” said Mullin. “The inactive wait list refers to individuals with whom we have made contact, but that we no longer hear from. They may become active once again by re-establishing contact with the program.” William H. Teed, Q.C., Chairman of AHSC’s Board of Directors thanked Cynthia and Margorie for their presentation noting that “the huge impact that the Methadone Program has made on this community is to be commended. It is very satisfying to see this program develop and have such success in our community.

Report of the CEO

President and CEO Dora Nicinski informed Board members that AHSC’s Physiotherapy Department has achieved the Canadian Physiotherapy Association’s highest accreditation award, four year accreditation with Commendation. Nicinski expressed her appreciation of the good work and success of the physiotherapy service.

Nicinski also advised Board members that AHSC’s Strategic Directions are being monitored through an indicator reporting system. Nicinski included the report package for Board members.

A new IV Day hospital opened in April at the Sussex Health Centre and plans are underway to expand this service across the region. Space for an IV Day Hospital is currently under construction at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Saint John. Plans are also to increase the hours of service at the IV Day Hospital at Saint John Regional Hospital.

Professional Advisory Committee

In his report on the Professional Advisory Committee, Chairman Ken Baird commented that the committee had received an update on the Alternate Level of Care Project. AHSC representatives continue to meet with nursing home administrators and are developing a marketing plan to help patients and families access the information they need when deciding on alternate levels of care.

Finance Committee

The fiscal year ended on March 31, 2007 and AHSC is now preparing for the external audit. Year-end financial statements will be presented to the Annual Meeting in June.
