March 28, 2007

The Board of Directors of Atlantic Health Sciences Corporation held its regular monthly meeting March 26, 2007 in the 5D Multipurpose Room at the Saint John Regional Hospital. The following are highlights of that meeting:

Hospice House

Sandy Johnson, Executive Director and Dr. Chris O’Brien, Medical Director of Hospice Saint John and Sussex presented the idea of a Hospice House to Board members. “Not only will this provide a warm and caring environment for patients receiving end of life care, but potentially it will free up acute care beds in the hospital setting,” explained Dr. O’Brien. O’Brien also explained that they had applied for both federal and provincial funding support for the project.. William H. Teed, Chairman, Atlantic Health Sciences Corporation Board of Directors thanked them for a most interesting presentation. The Board of Directors then passed a motion to send a letter in support of this project to the provincial government.

Report of the CEO

CEO Dora Nicinski told Board members that Infection Prevention and Control department has provided ”Ask me if I washed my hands stickers” to staff at Charlotte County Hospital. “Patient care porters at the Saint John Regional Hospital have also recently completed the “It’s in your hands” project where porters wear shirts with a graphic to remind us of infection prevention and control practices,” she said. “These are both good ways that staff can promote hand washing and encourage patients to be active participants in their care.”

Nicinski advised Board members that Dr.Toal has been recruited to Saint John and will begin Electrophysiology service at the NB Heart Centre. He is scheduled to begin in July.

Nursing staff at the Saint John Regional Hospital will participate with University of New Brunswick in the second phase of a research study “Utilization of Healthcare Services for Less-urgent Health Problems”. “Understanding what people believe are the important aspects of healthcare is an essential pre-requisite for desiging appropriate and responsive healthcare services,” she said.

Professional Advisory Committee

In his report on the Professional Advisory Committee, Chairman Ken Baird commented on a report of the activities of the Clinical Information Steering Committee. As AHSC moves forward to adoption of a new clinical information system, training needs are being identified. An assessment of the computer skills of employees who will be using the new system is now nearing completion.
