THE RESOURCE CENTRE FOR YOUTH CHOSEN AS LEAD AGENCY FOR GLOBAL YOUTH SERVICE DAY EFFORTS ALONGSIDE SOUTHERN NEW BRUNSWICK YOUTH

The Resource Centre for Youth(TRC) is a one stop shop for youth, between the ages of 12-24 where they can access Health Services, Self-Development Programs, Work Readiness & Life Skills Programs, Recreation and Community Services.

TRC will mobilize more than 600 young people to participate in the 20th Annual Global Youth Service Day, Friday, April 25 through Sunday, April 27, 2008, in Saint John. Sponsored by State Farm Companies Foundation, millions of youth in the United States and in more than 100 countries plan simultaneous service events and service-learning projects to celebrate Global Youth Service Day.

The Resource Centre for Youth plans to involve schools, clubs, churches, and other youth agencies in this initiative. The steering committee will be predominately be made up of youth producing a truly youth-led project. The goal is to have a large number of small and medium size activities undertaken throughout the Southern New Brunswick region. Many areas base their projects on topics such as homelessness, the environment, or helping other nations, but the main objective is to have an atmosphere where youth led service projects are valued by the community.

“Youth are capable of amazing things when given the opportunity”, explained the TRC’s Scott Crawford, “We often hear about their future potential, but actually young people are great leaders and contributors today. We are constantly wowed by the contribution youth make to our community.”

“It is a distinct honor to work with such amazing organizations. Their leadership increases the scale and visibility of youth service year-round, and helps youth in Canada play a lead role in learning about community needs, while giving their time, energy, commitment, and idealism,” said Steve Culbertson, president and CEO of Youth Service America. “Millions of young people serving together on Global Youth Service Day performing strategic service sends a powerful message of hope and healing around the globe.”

Global Youth Service Day 2008 Youth Ambassador Brad Snodgrass, a grade 11 St. Malachy’s student, sees the importance of the public’s perception of youth. "I am glad that the youth of Saint John can change their image. I am also glad that I can help everyone see teens in a new light".
