April 16, 2007 Community Concerned Alcohol and drug use during pregnancy and the immediate and long term effects on infants, children and youth as well as prevention and community strategies will be the theme of a two-day training program presented by the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the Regional Child at Risk team at Atlantic Health Sciences Corporation. “A Community Concerned” will be held April 19 and 20 in the Amphitheatre Level 1 of the Saint John Regional Hospital. This program is open to health professionals who work in obstetrics and paediatrics, social workers, police and correction workers, teachers and school administrators and child care workers. The agenda will include information and education on prenatal drug exposure and outcomes; psychosocial issues and treatment implications; and behavioural management of the prenatally exposed child and adolescent. Special guest speaker will be Ira J. Chasnoff, MD, president of the Children’s Research Triangle and a Professor of Paediatrics at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. He is a leading researcher in the field of maternal drug use during pregnancy and the effects on the newborn infant as well as the long term effects of exposed children and youth. On April 19th he will present “Prenatal Intervention with Substance Using Women and Update on Methadone Use During Pregnancy and Effect on the Newborn.” This session will begin at 7 p.m. in the Amphitheatre on the fifth floor, Tower D at the Saint John Regional Hospital. It is free and the public is invited. On Friday April 20th he will give a lecture titled “Providing Practical Strategies and Hope for Families Living with the Challenges of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder” This lecture will take place at the Salvation Army at 36 Waterloo Street (Entrance across from Tim Hortons) at 7.00 pm.
