October 31, 2006

The Board of Directors of Atlantic Health Sciences Corporation held its regular monthly meeting October 30 at St. Mark’s Anglican Church in St. George. The following are highlights of that meeting:

Physician Credentialling

Sherri Lynn Richardson, AHSC Physician Resource Coordinator gave Board members an overview of the process to credential new physicians. AHSC Chief of Staff Dr. Brian Wheelock added that Sherri Lynn coordinates the credentialling process very well. AHSC Chairman William Teed, Q.C. agreed and thanked Sherri Lynn for her dedication to physician recruitment.

Report of the CEO

In her report AHSC President and CEO Dora Nicinski updated Board members on Day of Surgery (DOSA) rates at the Saint John Regional Hospital. “The Saint John Regional Hospital has the highest rate in the province with 93.8% of elected cases admitted on the same day,” she said.

Nicinski also noted that work has begun on the preparation of space for the 2006 Rally of Hope minimal invasive suite at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Construction is expected to be completed in November and then equipment installation and training of staff and surgeons will occur. “When finished, AHSC will have the newest technology available for Minimal Invasive surgery east of Montreal. It will be a real showcase,” she explained.

Nicinski also provided statistical information showing bed occupancy rates at hospitals throughout the region. “The occupancy rate at the Saint John Regional Hospital was at 97.1% in September and over the past six months has averaged 93.4%,” she said. “An optimum rate would be closer to 80 to 85%.

Nicinski spoke to members regarding the numbers of patients waiting in hospital beds for alternate level of care. “In September there were 99 patients in this situation at the Saint John Regional Hospital and 218 across the region,” she explained.

Ken Baird, Chairman reported that the committee had received a report from Dr. Hilda Castro-Arriola on the position of Patient Safety Officer.
