July 26, 2006 The Board of Directors of Atlantic Health Sciences Corporation held its regular monthly meeting July 24 at St. Paul’s Anglican Church Hall, Grand Harbour, Grand Manan. The following are highlights of that meeting: Chairman’s Remarks William Teed, Q. C. opened the meeting by extending a thank you to the residents of Grand Manan for the hospitality Board members received during their visit. Teed then went on to thank Grand Manan Hospital administrator Kathy Lynn Linton for her expertise and service to the community. Finally he spoke to the physician coverage on Grand Manan. He spoke highly of the many years of devoted service given by current family physician on Grand Manan, Dr. Jesus Dapena. “Dr. Dapena continues to provide excellent health care to the citizens of Grand Manan,” he said. He echoed the words of area politicians as he thanked Dr. Brian Craig, AHSC Clinical Department Head of Family Medicine. “Dr. Craig is committed to finding a family physician for Grand Manan,” he said. “He works hard for this community.” Safer Healthcare Now! Dr. Brian Wheelock, Chief of Staff for Atlantic Health Sciences Corporation gave Board members and members of the public a presentation on Safer Healthcare Now!, a national campaign to decrease adverse events while in hospital. Dr Wheelock sits as Atlantic Health Sciences Corporation’s representative on the Atlantic Node Steering Committee of Safer Healthcare Now! ”Wheelock went onto describe Atlantic Health Corporation’s commitment to enhancing patient safety. William Teed, Q.C., Board chairman thanked Dr. Wheelock for updating Board members on this very important issue. “We are pleased to know that AHSC physicians and healthcare professionals take advantage of opportunities to enhance patient safety,” he said. Report of the CEO In her report AHSC President and CEO Dora Nicinski updated Board members on AHSC’s new Kennebecasis Valley Health Services. “We are bringing health services into the community,” she said. Nicinski explained that health services such as blood tests, ECG, holter monitoring and simple X-rays would be available (with an appointment). She told Board members we expect to have this service available in the early fall. Nicinski also brought Board members news from Fast Break at the Saint John Regional Hospital. “We have rolled out the new Always Fresh Tim Horton’s program and now have fresh muffins, cookies and donuts being prepared and served daily,” she explained. AHSC’s Nutrition and Food Services received a Gold Excellence Award from Tim Horton’s for its excellent first post-operative inspection. Nicinski then presented the Hay Benchmarking Comparison of Teaching Hospitals that showed the performance of the Saint John Regional Hospital as compared to other teaching hospitals across Canada. Of particular note was that 28.8% of our inpatients are older than 70 years of age. This is compared to an average of 23.6% percent nationally. Our weight per case which reflects acuity of illness is comparable with national averages and our cost for patient care at the Regional Hospital is lower than the average of our peer teaching hospitals across Canada. Professional Advisory Committee Ken Baird, Committee Chair reported that the professional Advisory Committee received a very informative presentation on the Safer Healthcare Now! Project’s Prevention of Surgical Site Infections initiative. Dr. Jarrett is the principal investigator on a team that also includes, Dr. Frank McCarthy, Lisa Keeping-Burke, Rose McCloskey (UNB), Daryl Steeves, Dr. Elizabeth MacDonald, and Dr. Donna MacNeil. The $20,000 grant will go towards a research project entitled Feasibility of Health Information Collected by Home Based Technology in Frail Older Adults to Promote Independence at Home. The following recommendation was passed: That a contract in the amount of $959,760. be awarded to Killam Properties Inc. (monthly lease payments totaling $319,920 per year for three years) for the supply of medical education resident program apartment accommodations to AHSC for a three-year term commencing November 2006 in accordance with AHSC RFP # 06-011 dated May 18, 2006 and supplier’s proposal dated June 6, 2006.
