The Board of Directors of Atlantic Health Sciences Corporation held its regular monthly meeting February 27 at the Meenan’s Cove Beach House in Quispamsis. The following are highlights of that meeting:

Canadian Cancer Society

Ann McTiernan, Executive Director and several Board members from the Canadian Cancer Society gave a detailed presentation on the activities of the organization. AHSC Chairman William Teed, Q.C. thanked the presenters and said “the work of the Canadian Cancer Society if well known throughout the community and Atlantic Health Sciences Corporation is committed to research into new and effective treatments for cancer.”

Health Services Kennebecasis Valley

Board members received an update on a new health services unit coming to the area. “In the spring of this year we plan to open a health services unit that will include blood testing, basic x-rays and ECG,” explained Sue Ness, administrative director of AHSC’s Extra-Mural program. AHSC’s KV Extra-Mural Program is also located at Village Place Mall, 175 Old Hampton Highway. Patients may schedule appointments for these services. “This will not be a walk-in service,” Ness said. “We have received feedback from community leaders, patients and politicians. We’re hearing that people are pleased to have these services available closer to home.”

Report of the CEO

In her report AHSC President and CEO Dora Nicinski spoke on the Carpet Replacement Program at the Saint John Regional Hospital. “Carpet replacement has begun in the public areas on Levels 1 and II of the hospital and will continue through to late spring,” she said. The carpet is to be replaced with non-allergenic carpet tiles and natural fibre linoleum sheets.

Nicinski reported that the Nurse Practitioner Research Project in Nursing Homes is a good example of integration and coordination of care and services. “The Nurse Practitioner hired by Atlantic Health Sciences Corporation (AHSC), is working in three area nursing homes and the principal investigator for the project is with University of New Brunswick Saint John. The initiation of the Nurse Practitioner Research Project entailed presentations at all three nursing homes so staff would become familiar with their roles and responsibilities in data collection.

The Dalhousie Medical School Accreditation of its residency program was held last week and, as an affiliated site, Atlantic Health Sciences Corporation was involved in meetings with the College of Family Physicians of Canada and Royal College surveyors. We await formal communication of the results of the review.

The satellite dialysis unit at Sussex Health Centre is now open three days per week with ten patients from the Sussex area receiving dialysis. “We are purchasing one more dialysis machine that will accommodate an additional two patients,” continued Nicinski.

Nicinski updated Board members on the Methadone Clinic saying that four physicians are now affiliated with the program. “The clinic now offers group counseling sessions four days a week and will be offering a monthly group for family members as well,” she said.

A Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program is being implemented in the Emergency Department at the Saint John Regional Hospital. A Nurse Examiner is a female nurse who is trained in gathering forensic evidence. The SANE Program offers sensitive, caring supportive and confidential care following a sexual assault.

Medical Advisory Committee

Mr. Ken Baird, chairperson gave the report of the Professional Advisory Committee. Board members were advised that AHSC’s Patient Registry has remained constant over the last month. “We have averaged approximately 10 registrations per week – mostly new residents in the area,” Baird said.
