December 5, 2006 RBC FINANCIAL GROUP ANNOUNCES $20,000 TO THE ATLANTIC HEALTH SCIENCES CORPORATION TEEN RESOURCE CENTRE SAINT JOHN, NB – For the third year, Atlantic Health Sciences Corporation’s Teen Drop-In Program in Saint John has been awarded a $20,000 RBC After School Program grant. The Center is one of only 72 after-school programs from across Canada selected for the grant. The official cheque presentation will take place Wednesday, December 6 at the Teen Resource Centre at 116 Coburg Street at 4:00 p.m. Mike Belliveau, manager, Saint John main branch, will present the funding to Scott Crawford, Youth Development Manager of the Teen Drop-In Centre. To be chosen for an RBC grant, after-school programs must offer structured, supervised activities in an environment \that provides what RBC has termed “3 Ss”: safety, social skills and self-esteem. The Drop-In Centre provides activities such as “Body Blast” (providing curling instruction, yoga, martial arts, etc), Art Madness where teens work with paint, charcoal, photography and also improv acting. They have a health clinic and periodically throughout the year take part in community volunteerism. “We are once again very pleased to receive support from RBC for a third year,” said Crawford. “It will allow our Centre to continue providing enhanced after-school programming for the youth of Saint John.” “We believe that the best after-school programs can give a real boost to the skills and knowledge children gain in a formal classroom,” said Mike Belliveau, manager of RBC’s Saint John Main branch. “We congratulate the Teen Resource Centre and know it will give youth a safe place to shine, and continue their learning through a wide range of activities that go beyond academics.” Since 1999, when RBC first began funding after school programs, we’ve helped over 11,000 kids in 139 community groups across Canada with donations totally more than $12.6 million. The granting process involves a unique request for proposal phase and a selection of grant recipients by community panels.
