March 3, 2005

The Board of Directors of Atlantic Health Sciences Corporation held its regular monthly meeting February 28 at the Masonic Hall in Hampton. The following are highlights of that meeting:

Inside Out Project

Margaret Melanson, Administrative Director Rehab and Psycho-Social Services for Atlantic Health Sciences Corporation gave a presentation on the Inside Out Project. “The objective of this project is to determine the need/sustainability of providing basic diagnostic services in a community setting,” she explained.  “In this instance the diagnostic services would include basic x-rays (like a chest x-ray), ECG and drawing blood or collecting specimens,” she said. Melanson described to Board members the methods used for researching this project. “We surveyed patients, spoke with stakeholders and studied patient volumes in these areas,” she explained. Melanson explained that a report has been presented to Senior Executive that recommends providing these services in the Kennebecasis Valley area. She also stressed this would not impact similar services currently provided at the Saint John Regional Hospital and at St. Joseph’s Hospital. “It is one step in AHSC’s commitment to providing enhanced access to services,” she said.

Report of the CEO

In her report, AHSC CEO Dora Nicinski advised Board members that the incidence of flu-like symptoms and pneumonia in the community has meant that facilities have experienced increased patient visits during the month of February. “A usual day at the Saint John Regional Hospital Emergency Department would have about 170 patients and on some days this month we had more than 240 patient visits,” she said.

Nicinski also reported to Board members that the surgical wait list in our region decreased by 173 patients in January. “This is due in part to an increase in OR time allotment. We also did a thorough review of patients and identified some patients who no longer needed surgery,” she explained.

Nicinski updated Board members on the growing interest in research currently developing in the NB Heart Centre. “The program is organizing to establish a research group to develop research proposals, while exploring education cardiac research needs and opportunities,” she said.  “Nous sommes en train de mettre sur pied le programme de façon à établir un groupe de recherche chargé d'élaborer des propositions de recherche, tout en déterminant les besoins et les possibilités en matière de recherche en cardiologie », a-t-elle déclaré.
