Trauma Orientation Nursing Manual The Trauma Competency Based Orientation Manual was developed in response to a need expressed by emergency nurses in our health care region. The purpose of the manual is to provide a resource and a guide to be used in the orientation process. Trauma nurses that are confident and competent in all aspects of trauma care are one of the key players in our dynamic trauma team.

Although diagnostics, interventions, and procedures may have to be tailored to accommodate individual facility resources, the manual will provide the essential concepts and framework needed to assist nurses in the challenges they encounter when managing the trauma patient.

A competency based orientation program provides a structured and comprehensive learning process permitting the adult learner to acquire the skills needed to perform competently in a new work environment. Nurses enter new positions with a variety of educational backgrounds and experiences. Some nurses need very little orientation yet others require extensive skill building.

Each section of the manual has specific objectives or competencies which address the knowledge required to perform to specific standards. Objectives are met by individual self paced learning accompanied by classroom time and clinical experience obtained when working with a preceptor. At the end of the orientation the new nurse will be tested on his or her knowledge base and will receive a performance evaluation to provide feedback regarding the skill level attained.
