Medical Specialties: Saint John Regional Hospital Medical Education Department The Saint John Regional Hospital Postgraduate Medical Education Department is affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine, Dalhousie and Memorial University. The Saint John Regional Hospital, anchor facility for the AHSC, is a major medical teaching hospital of Dalhousie University and is designated the Saint John Campus of the Faculty of Medicine, Dalhousie University and is affiliated with Memorial University in St. John's Newfoundland The Postgraduate Medical Education Department provides the infrastructure for the development and organization of Royal College and Family Medicine Integrated Residency training programs and undergraduate medical education. The Department is under the directorship of Dr. M. O. Iype, Assistant Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Dalhousie and Memorial Universities and Anglophone Coordinator for Medical Education, Province of New Brunswick. The department is responsible for the management of the Provincial Anglophone Medical Education Program and for the coordination of the Program among the New Brunswick Department of Health and Wellness, the Regional Health Authorities, Provincial Medical Education Coordinators and the Universities. More than 160 Royal College and Family Medicine medical trainees and 75 undergraduate trainees participate in core, selective and elective rotations at the Saint John Regional Hospital each year. An average of 50 undergraduate and post graduate trainees are on site within the health authority at any time. Residency training is provided within the Departments of Anaesthesiology, Diagnostic Radiology, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Geriatric Medicine, Internal Medicine, Neurosurgery, Obstetrics/Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Pathology, Plastic Surgery, Psychiatry, Radiation Oncology, Orthopaedic Surgery, General Surgery and Urology. Elective undergraduate and postgraduate rotations are also provided in Otolaryngology, Ophthalmology, and Dermatology. The advantage of the presence of the medical trainees on-site contribute to the promotion of quality patient care, the assurance of continuing education of staff and the improvement of recruitment initiatives just to name a few. Over 170 members of the AHSCs medical staff hold teaching appointments with the Dalhousie Faculty of Medicine and 80 of those carry dual appointments with Memorial Faculty of Medicine. They provide the trainees with experience in inpatient management and ambulatory clinics through bedside teaching, rounds, seminars and didactic sessions. Our teaching affiliation includes cooperative efforts of all faculty members of Dalhousie University and ongoing exchange with a visiting professor lectureship series in many specialty departments. It is the goal of faculty to provide the trainee with a learning experience that will instill a desire to continue learning more efficient, confident and positive approaches in diagnoses and management of our clients.
