Residents are always invited to the daily rounds, seminars and teaching sessions that occur at the SJRH in the myriad of specialty rotations. Medical Grand rounds, Trauma rounds, noon time "Lunch & Learn" Medical Teaching sessions, Palliative Care rounds, Family Medicine rounds, are among the popular sessions. In addition, Residents have bi-weekly Practice-based Small Group Learning Sessions, during which a Family Medicine topic is discussed. The New Brunswick Heart Centre's Annual Symposium has become a forum for clinicians and health care personnel to enhance their knowledge in the field of cardiovascular medicine. This event is recognized throughout the Atlantic Provinces as providing a timely and comprehensive review, with emphasis on clinically relevant subjects. AHSC also sponsors inter-provincial Annual Conferences on Health & Aging, Health & Wellness and Breast Health. EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES:Family Medicine Obstetrics: The residents at the community health centre have an exceptional obstetrical experience. Each resident is assigned 6 – 10 prenatal patients at their first prenatal visit. The resident sees the patient at each antenatal visit through the core family medicine rotation and on Half Day Back. Near term, the resident’s name is included on the prenatal sheet that goes to the case room and a form is placed on the patient’s chart such that the resident will be notified when the patient is in labour regardless of the rotation they are working on. The resident then attends the delivery, takes care of the baby and then follows the patient and newborn in the office after the delivery. The resident has the opportunity to do newborn care, the first postpartum visit, etc. Palliative Care: Palliative Care is included in the Family Medicine experience both in the PGY1 and PGY2 years. The resident will participate in the care of patients receiving Palliative Care for cancer and other life threatening illnesses on the 8-bed Palliative Care unit as well as the assessment and management of patient and symptom issues in other areas of the hospital, outpatient clinics and in the patient’s home.
